International Walk to School MonthOctober is officially 'International Walk to School Month'.  In 2007 a total of 42 countries participated in this global event, and it is hoped that even more countries will participate this year. It is an opportunity for teachers and schools to encourage the healthy activity of walking and highlight to parents and children the many benefits that walking offers.

This now global event was first initiated in Hertfordshire, UK, in 1994 and has grown gradually bigger in each subsequent year. Take a look at which countries are involved and how they are organising events here.

Walking to school reduces pollution and traffic congestion, it encourages physical activity, helps children develop road sense and road safety skills, and gives parents, carers and children a sociable time to interact together.

Resources for teachers and schools, including worksheets for children are available and you can view photos of past events online too.

The British theme for Walk to School month this year is 'Power Up', focussing on getting children to power up with energy, ready for school. Britain aims to reduce the number of children travelling to school by car, as this figure has doubled in the last twenty years.

Encourage your class or children to walk to school tjhis month and support the aims of your Schools Travel Plan.
